great lakes brewery
Once I surpassed the notion that beer is a purely utilitarian device, I’ve attempted to develop what I would hope is an evolving palette and a greater appreciation for a good brew. While the craft-brewing movement is no doubt becoming quickly fashionable these days, I can’t say I entirely mind one bit at all.
There was most definitely a time in my life when I thought, by and large,...

BLAQSTARR “OH MY DARLIN’” from FRESH KILL on Vimeo.
Homie for life Hilton Carter recently linked up with fellow L.A.-by-way-of-Baltimore transplant Blaqstarr to shoot the wonderful “Oh My Darlin’” video.
From a musical perspective, and as a citizen of The City That Reads for the last five years or so, it’s interesting to see the mutation of...

greetings from angola, africa
Thanks to SAMK Eventos I was given the opportunity to travel from the States, alongside the legendary Little Louie Vega of Masters at Work and Neil Armstrong, Jay-Z’s tour DJ, representing the USA for the second annual Rave Dos Dj’s. This was the first time American DJ’s ever performed in Angola, and we threw down with help from countless local Angolan DJ’s and the...

cyanotype synthesis
Last week Mr. Carter’s disc jockey (and one of my favorite people ever) DJ Neil Armstrong dropped the incredible “DNA of the Blueprint” mix, which chronicles the illustrious career of the one and only Hova in fine 5th Platoon fashion. If you’ve ever heard Neil’s mixes before, this one is exceptionally good, and if you are new to Mr. Armstrong, be prepared to be...

new mix: sort of like a dream
For the first mix under the Missile Command umbrella I decided to take things in a slightly different direction than I typically go in…so gone are the cuts and quick drops, etc., replaced by a more serene and balanced aural experience. The goal was to create a foggy, dream-like atmosphere, one with few peaks and valleys but instead spongey and shapeless. Sort of like a dream.

black dynamite in the hour of chaos
Last Friday Hilary and I trucked on down to Landmark’s E St. Cinema in DC to catch a midnight showing of a film I’ve been eagerly awaiting (to say to least) - Scott Sanders’ hilarious sendup of blaxploitation films, “Black Dynamite”.
Simply put — everything in Sanders’ film is pitch-perfect — from the look and feel of the film used in the...

washington, dc 1.09.10: rjd2 official afterparty
I’ll be anchoring the 9:30 Club Backbar for RJD2’s upcoming stop in our nation’s capitol. Not only will RJ be prepping for the January 19th release of his new album, The Colossus, but he will also be hitting the road as Kenna’s tour DJ in the coming months. Check out RJ’s site for a free download of “Games You Can Win”, The Colossus’ lead single,...

who can it be now?
Found this pic when I was diggin’ through the good ‘ol iPhoto the other day. I Had the chance to DJ a house party with DJ Drew “Grandmaster Dee” of the legendary group Whodini. The trio was responsible for the classics “The Freaks Come Out At Night”, “Friends”, ”Five Minutes of Funk”, and “One Love”, as well as a slew of...

Just thought I’d take a stab at re-doing our flyer for Monday, since Chad and I weren’t too stoked on the bottle service-esque nature of the original. Wrote a song ‘bout it, like to hear it? Here it go…

blueprint + blue lights
The Hova juggernaut made it’s way to Baltimore this week, so the troops were rounded up for a warm welcome back to Charm City.
Jay-Z’s official tour DJ, Neil Armstrong, and Chad Hugo catching a view of the city.
Neil twitters via the kneeling chair. I swear, it’s great for one’s posture.
Lugging around a giant bag of cold remedies from Rite Aid.

ring the alarmz, another sound is dying
Back on Labor Day weekend the fine folks from Noah Larmz threw the epic Fantastic Planet 1-Year Anniversary party, at the wonderfully-named Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach. Myself and my long-lost homey DJ Doddie a/k/a Wizard got down, foam hands were waved like they just didn’t care, and a gorilla showed up. All in all, a blast.
Check out the entire gallery of the night’s...

fantastic voyage
I definitely don’t need a new fan. I have a ten year-old one in my apartment that barely gets any PT as it is…but dammit, Dyson went and made this awesome-looking thing, the air multiplier, and now I really want a new fan (specifically, the one pictured above). At $299, these things are bladeless, and according to the product page, don’t cause “unpleasant...

how i could just kiliman
On October 26th, 2009 my buddy Kenna will be undertaking what may be his most massive project yet. The grammy-nominated recording artist will be scaling the largest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, along with friends such as Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, and more, in order to raise awareness for the global clean water crisis. You can track the progress of Kenna and his group,...

"i'm the ish" official video by dj class
This one took a second to come out, but it’s finally here! Directed by Chris Robinson’s Robot Films and shot in Baltimore, I have a tiny tiny tiny cameo appearance in it. Like real small…but still glad to be a part of this project! I’m wearing the red shirt at the end of the hallway in the opening scenes. Here are a few extra pics from the shoot, courtesy of DJ...

n*e*r*d in los angeles
After Las Vegas, I hopped back on a plane and headed down to Los Angeles. Rockstar Energy Drink was hosting the show, in addition to being an official X-Games event.
n*e*r*d on stage at The Avalon in Hollywood.
Chad and Karen after the show.
More adventures to come?

can't keep runnin' away
I made a little cameo appearance in the “Paper Runnin’” video by The Demonstrators (E Major and DJ Impulse)…my roommate Liza is in the video as well. I pop up at the 1:27 mark. Shot in Baltimore and directed by Garrett Guidera.
n*e*r*d in vegas
After missing the SF show due to airport hell, I finally made it Las Vegas for the N.E.R.D. show at LAX. Pharrell is about to jump out on stage and kick things off.
The band goes in.
Yay! Tammy showed up. Quit stalking me!
Believe me when I tell you there was a bucket of Mo’ very close to me when I snapped this pic!!
Now off to LA!!

say goodbye to your face
Show some support for the good homey Kenna by doing your best version of HP’s “The Computer is Personal” ad campaign. Grab a webcam, video camera, or a pre-existing video and add your own personal spin to it — the only criteria is that you can’t show your face. Winning entry gets $300,000. the secret life of plants
I was fortunate to be invited out to Los Angeles this past week to spend some time at the Record Plant recording studio. It was pretty awesome to say the least. Like people were always bringing us stuff like fresh baked cookies and yogurt parfaits. Plus there were these really good mint chocolate candies in the bathroom, like when you go to a club and wanna take a piss and there’s a dude...
